Hello CollegeBaseball360 fans,

This is Pete LaFleur and I will be joining Sean Stires in providing CB360 blog posts throughout the weekend, as we place particular focus on the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge.

I'm settling in to recap some of the action from earlier in the day, so stay tuned ...

Michigan State Edges UConn in BE/Big 10 Opener

(Clearwater, FL) Michigan State gave first-year head coach Jake Boss, Jr. his first win as the Spartans beat Connecticut 4-2 in the Big East/Big Ten Baseball Challenge opener at Jack Russell Stadium.

Nolan Moody (1-0) gave MSU seven solid innings on the mound to earn the win. Moody gave-up just two earned runs on seven hits.

Centerfielder Brandon Eckerle was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Michigan State, while UConn's Matt Burnett was 4 for 4 in the loss.

Michigan State faces Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at 4pm at McKechnie Field in Brandenton. UConn plays Ohio State at 4pm Saturday at Jack Russell Stadium.

I Stand Corrected...

There was a game that started before this morning's UConn-Michigan State match-up at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge. Florida Gulf Coast beat Central Michigan 4-3 in a game that started just after midnight this morning in Ft. Myers, FL in the FGCU Invitational.

That makes FGCU pitcher Patrick Nathanson the first winning pitcher of 2009. Central Michigan's Steve Teno struckout 10 in 7.0 IP, but he suffered the loss.

The two teams will play again tonight at 8pm.

Opening Day Is Here!

(Clearwater, FL) When I woke-up this morning the sun was shining, and it's still shining. In fact, the local forecast says it's supposed to shine all day. That's good news, because it was overcast almost all day yesterday in the Tampa Bay area, and we had an afternoon downpour that lasted a good 45 minutes or so.

Nine games are on tap in this area today with the inaugural Big East/Big Ten Challenge. Meanwhile, with the college baseball season starting across the nation today. Louisville at Florida is the only game in the nation that involves two ranked teams. That's saying something, considering how many national polls there are. (It's also somewhat ironic that Louisville is one of four Big East teams that will not be participating in the Challenge this weekend.)

In any case, let the record show that UConn vs. Michigan State will likely be the first college baseball game played in 2009. (If you know of a game that starts before 10am Eastern Time let us know.)

My CB360 partner, Pete, and I will be blogging throughout the weekend.

On The Ground In Florida

I made it to Florida last night. The trip was pretty uneventful. Flew out of Chicago, where it was snowing, and made it to Clearwater, FL late last night.

The weather here is not great right now (although it's much better than in the midwest). It's overcast today, and only in the low 60s. It's supposed to be the same for most of the weekend.

I'll be at the Yankees' spring training facility this afternoon where Notre Dame is practicing. I'll be blogging as much as possible while we're here for the weekend.
