Penn State bounbed back from its Friday-night loss (15-6 vs. St. John's) to defeat Big Ten foe Northwestern on Sunday, 9-1. It was the second of two games today between Big Ten teams (such games will not count as part of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, and they also will not count to the Big Ten regular-season games).
Due to an uneven number of BIG EAST (8) and Big Ten (10) teams at this event, there needs to be at least one game per day between Big Ten teams. Illinois defeated Iowa on Friday night (8-3), while Michigan rallied to beat Purdue in 10 innings earlier today (4-3). The final Big Ten-Big Ten game of the weekend will be on Sunday (Michigan State vs Minnesota).
Penn State doubled up Northwestern in hits (12-6) while playing error-free in the field. The game was tight through the middle innings, before PSU scored four in the 6th for a 7-0 lead. Senior 1B Cory Wine had an impressive day (2-for-4, BB, 3 RBI, 3 R, 3B, 2B) while senior RHP Scott Kelley picked up the win (5.2 IP, R, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks).
