BE/Big 10 Challenge Day One Notebook

Here's a look at some noteworthy happenings from the first day of the Big East/Big 10 Challenge in the Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL area:

  • Michigan's Kenny Fellows' RBI single in the bottom of the 9th gave Michigan a 6-4 win over USF. The Wolverines had scored three runs in the 8th to tie the game.
  • USF's Ryan Lockwood extended his hitting streak to 31 games with an RBI single.
  • Dan Black's 2-out RBI double in the 9th lifted Purdue to an 11-10 win over Cincinnati.
  • Mike Spina and Justin Riddell hit two home runs apiece in the Bearcat's loss. There were only 3 more home runs hit by the other 17 teams combined during the entire day's action.
  • Seton Hall scored 3 of its first 4 runs on wild pitches in the Pirate's 11-2 win over Minnesota.
  • Golden Gopher starter Chauncy Handran had 5 WP.
  • Three Gopher pitchers combined for 11 K, 7 BB, 5 HBP, and 7 WP.
  • Gino Matias, Greg Hopkins and Joe Hanik had 3 hits apiece in St. John's 15-6 win over Penn State.
  • St. John's and PSU each committed 3 errors in the game.
  • Chris Enourato earned a 4-inning save in West Virginia's 14-4 win over Indiana. Enourato gave-up two runs with two strikeouts enroute to the 12th save of his career.
  • Northwestern's Eric Joskisch tossed his fifth career complete game in the Wildcat's 5-3 win over Georgetown. Joskisch was the 2008 Big 10 Freshman of the Year.
  • Ohio State's Alex Wimmers earned his first career win in his first career start as the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame 2-0. Wimmers made 25 relief appearances as a freshman in 2008.
  • Michigan State's Nolan Moody got his first career win in his 52nd career appearance in the Spartan's 4-2 win over UConn in the first game of the Challenge.
  • MSU head coach Jake Boss, Jr. became the first Spartan coach since Tom Smith in 1983 to win in his debut game.
  • Illinois beat Iowa 8-3. Eight of the eleven runs in the game, including all three Iowa runs, were unearned.
  • The Illini committed three errors, while the Hawkeyes had four miscues in the loss.
  • Illinois reliever Aaron Martin earned a 4-inning save with five strikeouts in relief.
  • About 25% of the runs scored on day one of the Challenge were unearned.
